BSD (BASS-STAR-DOS) began as a project in 1998, formed by two French lovers of electronic music, alternative trends and indie movement. Without resources, and virtually no experience producing dance music, we had to wait almost 10 years to realize the concept in which we wanted to make BSD.
During these 10 years we were flirting with Hip-Hop, Funk, New Wave, Nu Disco, Elektro, Breaks, etc … And much more, because during those years we review all that has been occurring in electronics since the late 70’s with the advent of disco music and 12” vinyl, to today in which digital files dominate the electronic scene.
Currently, with little more than a year showing the public our particular ideology, BSD have reaped success after success under iBreaks Records label, which bet on us at first, reaching up to the top of the global Breaks scene, finally confirming us as one of the most prolific producers of recent times. Proof of this is the “Breakthrough Producer 2010” award, which was bestowed to us in the last edition of Breakspoll Awards (2010).
The first album, Malditos Bass-Star-Dos! is the work of several months in which BSD have tried to capture our open minds and our obsession with attractive sounds. To present this project, we have created 10 new tracks, which will be accompanied by another 8 tunes published under iBreaks Records label, forming a compilation full of variety with a predominance of Breaks genre.
Tell us about yourself. Who is Bass Star Dos?
BSD: We are 2 musicians who are into music production for over 10 years, and since a couple of years we are making a place in the world electronic scene. We cannot complain about how our recent career has been lapsing. Apart from having released a few singles that have been well received, we were chosen “Best Breaktrough Producer” in Breakspoll 2010. We are about to release our first album entitled “Malditos BASS-STAR-DOS!” and the feedback is very positive.
How you got into music and the breaks scene? What are your biggest influences?
BSD: We started in the Breaks in 2000 approximately, although we had heard some things like that in previous years. Our biggest influences belong to different styles and times. We can enjoy listening to an orchestra from the 30s; and the next day we listen to the last album of Editors. Also we love R’n'B and Funk from 60s, 70s and 80s, as well as New Wave from the 80s or dance music from the 90s.
What soft do you use for making music?
BSD: We use software like FL Studio, Reason, lots of vst like Vanguard, Omnisphere, etc.
Why are you wearing masks?
BSD: And why not? There are many reasons but the main one is that Eric was excited to set up a masked-duo project, and as super-heroes is more difficult because we don’t fly, nor have magical powers, etc … We decided to dress up in robes and masks for our music project. That is what happens when you grow up watching and listening to groups that are masked or disguised as Space (French band from the 70s), Kiss, Alice Cooper, The Residents, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Daft Punk…
Is “Mental Machine Muzik” your label? Why did you launch it? Will you release someone else besides Bass Star Dos?
BSD: Yes, it is our own label. It’s an idea we had in mind for quite some time. In fact, we were going to start running with it before signing with iBreaks, Kultür introduced us to JMekka and we decided to release our music from his label.
Over time we realized that if we want to have absolute control over our releases, we have to release them ourselves, apart from what we were getting with iBreaks we could achieve by our own. Currently, our intention is to put the label on orbit, make it known and give it a reputation and once it has prestige we’ll consider to work with other producers. For now we will continue releasing our own music.
Any exclusive info on coming album ‘Malditos Bass-Star-Dos’? Will be a remix album?
BSD: We are preparing an EP with 5 or 6 tracks that might be called “Malditos Bonus Traxxx!” which will include tunes that have been left out of our first “long play”, a new remix of one of the tracks of the album, so we’ll see… Besides we are preparing new material and it is not exclusively Breaks. We also are counting on vocals for some of our new songs.
Who is your favourite breaks producer?
BSD: We have never had favorite producers, but we love some productions of Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors, Beta, Kultür + Colombo, Curl & Dean, etc … We like the songs that convey something.
What do you think about the launch of breakbeat-news.info?
BSD: Today is important to have more Breaks-focused Internet spaces. In recent years the scene has been damaged, mainly by the invasion of very poor quality music, that the only thing has managed is to discredit our movement. Before there were more spaces dedicated to the Breaks, but most are missing. So, we thanks to all new sites that appear to support this style of music, despite all that will not help as most producers don’t make Breaks attractive to the vast majority of the public.
In your case, we see that you report the news that hit the market, doing interviews with producers, offering sessions for download, etc… Without a doubt your space is an interesting place to visit.
Are you going to release your remixes on The Crystal Method and Plump DJs?
The Crystal Method – You Know It`s Hard (BSD Remix)
Plump DJs – Rocket Soul (BSD Remix)
BSD: These remixes were made for exclusive use in our sessions. We also presented them to their original authors, if looked interesting to do something with them, but we received no response. So, they will continue in our case forever… A pity.
Tell us about exclusive mix you’ve kindly offered up for breakbeat-news.info readers?
BSD: It has been easy, we have mixed some of the tracks of our album “Malditos BASS-STAR-DOS!” with some productions we currently like and who belong to other artists. In essence, what we think may be the best Breaks the moment.
